John F. Kennedy, Jr. remembered…

It’s hard to believe that it has been ten years since John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren, were killed in a plane crash off the coast of Massachusetts.  As we found out with the recent celebrity deaths; Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, it’s hard to know why so many people mourn for someone that they never actually met.  For me maybe it was because I am from Massachusetts where the Kennedy Family became iconic.  We grew up with them.  The Kennedy’s may have belonged to America but they came from Mass.  Maybe it was because John was a few years older than me and had the promise of being a leader of my generation.  Or maybe he was just so damned good looking and I had a crush.  Isn’t tall, dark and handsome an ideal that we hear over and over?  He had that!

We’ll never know what John might have done with the rest of his life.  He certainly took a path of his own but also maintained the Kennedy way of public service and giving back to the community.  He seemed bright, had scores of friends and appeared not to let the gravity of his name and family fame go to his head.  Recently, People Magazine published a photo spread of personal pics from one of his closest friends.  Some of the shots are from just weeks before he died.  He looks relaxed, at ease and enjoying life.  That is the John that I want to remember.

  1. I truly could not believe that it’s been TEN YEARS since he died. For some reason it seems much more recent than that. In some way, I guess he was a bigger part of my consciousness than I thought as it seems that he hasn’t been gone that long.
