From the City of West Hollywood Web Site:
The City of West Hollywood is hosting the fifth annual Re-Use-A-Shoe Program from Tuesday, February 17, 2009 through Sunday, May 31, 2009. The Re-Use-A-Shoe Program is an environmental and community service program in which the donation of used athletic shoes are recycled and then used to build athletic fields, tracks and even playground surfacing. All brands of athletic shoes are eligible for recycling; however, the Re-Use-A-Shoe Program is for athletic shoes only, no sandals, leather shoes, boots, flip flops and no metal shoes of any kind.
Recycle old athletic shoes by dropping them in the blue recycling carts that are located at the following West Hollywood drop-off locations:
- West Hollywood City Hall lobby, 8300 Santa Monica Boulevard;
- West Hollywood Sheriff Station lobby, 780 N. San Vicente Boulevard; and
- Train West Hollywood lobby, 624 North La Cienega Boulevard.
Nationally, more than 15 million shoes have been collected, shredded and turned into 250 football and soccer fields, playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, many in the Los Angeles County area. Last year, residents and businesses of West Hollywood contributed more than 1200 pairs of shoes to the Re-Use A-Shoe Program.For more information, please contact Susannah Turney, Environmental Programs Coordinator, at (323) 848-6499.
